Background: Just moved here from NJ in January for work. I am in sales, and relocated to our NC office in CLT. I have a company car, with company insurance, and it is registered with my company (still with NJ at the moment)
What Is Restriction 9 On Driver's License
So I went to get my NC license today. My NJ one expires this July and figured I would just make the move to NC official. Anyway, after showing all my credentials, I showed my proof of insurance which is my company's policy. Again, I do not own a personal car, the company bought mine when I was promoted into sales. So the woman at the DMV told me I cannot get a 'regular' license and will have a restriction on it to 'fleet vehicles only', meaning I can only operate my company car or rentals. Since I do not have insurance in my name, I cannot drive anyone else's car but my company car, and lose my license if caught.

Now this makes zero sense to me. In NJ, it didn't matter if you had insurance when getting a license. The state only cared that, at the time of an accident or pull over, the vehicle was insured under someone (company, parent, sibling, etc). I would drive my mother's car occasionally, and it was insured under her, not me.
Can anyone help shed some light on this for me? I am a bit puzzled. The whole perk of having a car for personal and business use with my company is not having to pay insurance. But in order to drive any other cars, I need my insurance? I mean, what if someone is drunk and I have to drive their car home. Now I'm going to risk license suspension for not having personal insurance? Surely no company is going to insure me for no vehicle, since I do not own a personal vehicle. I also can't be the only salesman in NC with just a company car. The way this was explained to me by the lovely worker at the DMV makes it feel as if NC is forcing you to buy insurance to have a drivers license.
My father was a cop in NJ with some buddies in NC who he was going to ask, but I figured I would ask this sub. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was confused since I used to have personal coverage on my Jetta, and therefore could drive other cars because I still had coverage on my own vehicle. But now that the company bought out my Jetta and is owned/insured by them, I need non-owners insurance.
