Hello,

I am running Windows 8.1, and Windows Update has downloaded the Windows 10 setup files.

However, I have chosen not to upgrade to Windows 10 at this point.

I have cancelled my Windows 10 upgrade reservations (I have multiple machines).

However, the Windows 10 setup files are still there. These take up a large amount of space, 6.2GB in the c:$Windows.~BT folder and 681MB in c:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload folder (I learned of those folders from other forum threads). This is too much for my smallish SSD and certainly my 24GB Windows tablet.

Also, every day I get a message in the system event log that installation of Windows 10 has failed because of error 0x80240020, which is extra weird since I did not ask for or want to install Windows 10 now.

What is the correct way to reclaim this disk space?

I have tried:

Delete Old Windows Installer Files

- Running disk cleanup on disk C, this does not remove these files.

- Removing the folders listed above by hand. Something that was not easy to do but I did manage in the end (FilExile). But then after a while the files simply reappeared (this appears to be by design, a way to trigger an automatic redownload).

- Looking for this update in the Windows Update screens, to cancel or delete or whatever it. But it does not seem to appear in that list as a regular entry.

Delete Windows Setup Files

So again, I do not wish to upgrade to Windows 10 now, I want to reclaim that disk space used by temporary setup files in c:$Windows.~BT, how do I do that.

Regards,

Sander.
